What is tooth sensitivity?<\/h2>\n

Dental hypersensitivity is characterized and defined as\u00a0pain or discomfort of the teeth when faced with a stimulus<\/b>. This stimulus can be a change in temperature or the chemical nature of the substance we are eating. The pain lasts for a certain moment and then disappears until the next stimulus that causes it.<\/p>\n

Tooth sensitivity affects 1 in 7 people, especially women.<\/b>\u00a0The pain usually appears in everyday situations and is more common in autumn and winter. But what is the origin of this sensitivity in the teeth?<\/p>\n

The origin of tooth sensitivity:<\/h2>\n

In healthy teeth there is a layer that protects the crown called enamel. Likewise, under the gums there is another layer that protects the root of the tooth called the cementum. Finally, beneath the enamel and cementum is the\u00a0dentin, a less dense layer that contains microscopic tubules<\/b>\u00a0(small hollow tubes or channels).<\/p>\n

When the dentin loses the protective covering of the enamel or cementum, or the gums retract leaving part of the root exposed, these tubules allow\u00a0temperature or acidity to reach the nerves and cells within the tooth, generating tooth sensitivity<\/b>.<\/p>\n

What elements can cause tooth sensitivity?<\/h2>\n

Dental sensitivity is caused by an erosion of the enamel or cement. And\u00a0this erosion may have been caused by very different reasons<\/b>:<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Foods and drinks that cause tooth sensitivity:<\/h3>\n

The consumption of acidic drinks such as wine or carbonated water or foods that contain acids<\/b>\u00a0such as acidic fruits, snacks with vinegar, sweets can cause sensitivity. It is also common for some swimmers to suffer from this problem from frequent contact with chlorinated water.<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Tooth decay:<\/h3>\n

Closely related to the previous point is\u00a0dental caries<\/a>, an infectious disease caused by bacteria that exist in the mouth and that\u00a0can also damage the dentin, with its consequent consequences<\/b>.<\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Medication that causes tooth sensitivity:<\/h3>\n

Some medications can cause tooth sensitivity such\u00a0as long-term aspirin or vitamin C treatments<\/b>. People with hiatal hernia with regurgitation and vomiting also suffer from sensitivity.<\/p>\n

4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Improper tooth brushing:<\/h3>\n

5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Bruxism:<\/h3>\n

Grinding your teeth at night or clenching them excessively<\/b>\u00a0throughout the day ends up causing significant damage to the enamel.<\/p>\n

6)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Fractured or worn teeth:<\/h3>\n

Any damage or fracture to the teeth can lead to tooth sensitivity. The\u00a0same thing happens with fillings in poor condition.<\/b><\/p>\n

7)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Gum disease:<\/h3>\n

The inflammation of the gum tissue caused by gum disease\u00a0can cause the roots to be exposed<\/b>, generating sensitivity in the teeth.<\/p>\n

8)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Gum recession:<\/h3>\n

An advanced stage of gum recession\u00a0can expose the root with its consequent consequences<\/b>.<\/p>\n
